A classic example is the “prisoner’s dilemma.” Two suspects are questioned separately. If both stay silent, they get light sentences. If one betrays the other, the betrayer goes free while the other gets a heavy sentence. If both betray, they both get moderate sentences. Rationally, each has an incentive to betray—but that leads to a worse outcome for both than if they had cooperated.
The Nash equilibrium shows that rational individual choices don’t always lead to the best collective result. It’s a powerful insight that applies to economics, politics, and everyday decision-making.
Strategic Dominance – When One Strategy Always Wins
Another key concept is strategic dominance. A strategy is said to be dominant if it produces a better outcome than any other strategy, no matter what the opponent does.
For example, if you’re playing a game where choosing Strategy A always gives you a higher payoff than Strategy B—regardless of your opponent’s move—then A is a dominant strategy. In that case, it would be irrational to choose anything else.
However, in many games, no dominant strategy exists. Players must instead anticipate others’ choices and respond optimally—and that’s where the Nash equilibrium often comes into play.
